Single-mode interband cascade laser with a slotted waveguide

The design of a single-mode interband cascade laser (ICL) using slotted waveguide is presented. This technique was explored as an inexpensive alternative to distributed feedback lasers since standard photolithography can be used in fabrication and complex techniques, such e-beam lithography, re-growth steps, and/or metal gratings, avoided. waveguides must carefully simulated before ensure the efficacy masks with each ICL growth. Limitations behavior key parameters are discussed. Single-mode emission achieved for certain temperature injected current conditions, validating operation Sb based laser. ICLs were emitting from single longitudinal mode at 3.5 μm 2 mW power per facet output 20 °C threshold currents around 80 mA.
